if they were allowed to marry...many more normal men would go into the priesthood...

I'm not sure that's true, Texas.
There are and have been paedophiles in many walks of life, particularly those in positions of trust where children at involved. For obvious reasons.
Where the Catholic Church so dramatically went wrong, in camparison to the other institutions was to pretect those paedophiles who were reported to them.
Quite why they persistently did that? Only they really know.

Isn't the Vatican still sheltering the arch criminal Ratzinger, who was in charge of the policy which simply moved "papist nonces" around to protect the Church's reputation?
Everything the present Pope says is a load of shit until they try Ratzinger.

Given that he's named after Francis of Assisi, I'd like to see him using some of opulent wealth of the Vatican to actually help people.
Until that point, I'll suspect he's a pontificating head of the same old Catholic Church (yes, I know).

Has the Church opened up its records regarding priests accused and then shifted and nothing done?

There are so many paedophile priests in the Catholic church -4,000 of them now facing credible evidence of sexual assault against children - that we are almost at the point of assuming that all Catholic clergy are either child abusers themselves or complicit in the crimes of their colleagues.
That is especially true of the senior clergy in the Vatican,who knew what was going on for decades but decided the image of the Church was more important than the safety and well being of the children who were being raped and abused by their own priests.
Pope Francis should be arrested and hauled away for questioning.And so should Ratzinger, his predecessor,who has been hidden away from view by the Vatican because of his close involvement with the cover ups and destruction of evidence relating to paedophiles that the Vatican orchestrated while he was there.
These people are vile, absolutely revolting.
